Common Questions about IIBA and BA Training

Common Questions about IIBA and BA TrainingYou’ve got questions, we’ve got answers. IIBA certification and BA training are vital to your success as a Business Analyst, and we want to make sure you’re on the right track. Below are questions I’m commonly asked about BA education and certification.

What is IIBA?

The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) is a nonprofit association that represents, serves, and certifies Business Analysts, Systems Analysts, Project Managers, and a variety of consultants. IIBA defines the standards analysts work by and recognizes as well as certifies them. If you join IIBA, you’ll develop your skill set and expand your network.

What is the IIBA certification process?

Two types of certification are offered, and both require a certain number of hands-on hours and education to be eligible to sit for the certification examination.

The Certification of Competency in Business Analysis (CCBA®) has the following criteria:

  • 3750 hours of BA work experience in the past seven years
  • 21 hours of professional development in the last four years
  • Two references from a client, manager, or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) designee
  • Signed IIBA Code of Conduct

The Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) has the following criteria:

  • 7500 hours of BA work experience in the past 10 years
  • 21 hours of Professional Development in the last four years
  • Two references from a client, manager, or Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) designee
  • Signed IIBA Code of Conduct

Should I care about IIBA certification?

Yes. Although IIBA certification is voluntary, many employers look for it as proof that you have top-level Business Analyst expertise. When you have certification, you have much more choice in projects and can command a higher salary. It also demonstrates a commitment to the Business Analysis profession.

Does IIBA recognize your courses?

Yes! The International Institute of Business Analysis does recognize all my courses, and they give PD / CDU credits towards IIBA certification for anyone who takes my courses.

Some IIBA certification programs require a certain amount of experience in Business Analysis. Does your program have a set experience requirement?

No. Whether you’re new to Business Analysis or have been doing it for decades, I want to help you. My training and coaching offer the basic Business Analyst skills that new and mid-level people need and more seasoned BAs may like a refresher on. I also offer advanced techniques for people at all phases of Business Analyst careers. If you find yourself in need of career coaching, I offer that as well.
